Japan Diary 16: A Rest Day by Mount Fuji

Deutsch | English

Monday, 12 October 2026 · Morning note, around 6 a.m.

Today is a rest day. After seven days of riding, if I have counted correctly, the break is well deserved — and necessary. We are starting with something practical: getting our clothes back in order. Even on a great journey, the laundry eventually needs doing.

Anneliese has unfortunately caught a cold. No runny nose, but a cough. A day without the usual riding stage comes at the right time.

We are not planning to do absolutely nothing, though. We have booked an evening outing to Mount Fuji, hoping to see it at sunset and in the twilight. I very much hope the weather holds.

It is only six in the morning as I write. Looking out of the window, I cannot see Fuji at all. A veil of mist has hidden the mountain that would otherwise be directly visible from our room.

Yesterday, that wonderful view; this morning, nothing for now. There is still time before evening. We will see whether Fuji decides to reveal itself again.

A Roller Coaster Instead of Fuji

While Fuji hid behind its veil of mist early in the morning, something else directly outside our hotel window was impossible to miss: an amusement park with enormous roller-coaster tracks. Quite a lively view for a rest day — even if our first attraction was the laundry.
