BODY

Fit for Life

Travel, movement and lived experience as part of a life that stays engaged and fully awake.
I do not move because I want to look younger. I move because I want to remain available to life — to travel, climb, ski, ride, explore and begin again.

01

The Body Is How
We Participate

We often speak about the body as if it were an object to correct. Too heavy. Too weak. Too slow. Not young enough. The language quickly becomes a catalogue of deficiencies.

I prefer a different question: What does my body still allow me to experience?

It allows me to walk through an unfamiliar city, ride a motorcycle through the mountains, swim, play golf, sit in meditation, write for hours and carry my own life through another journey.

A body does not need to be perfect to be deeply capable.
It needs attention, movement and respect.

02

Movement
Is Freedom

Movement is not merely exercise. It is freedom expressed physically.

The freedom to get up without assistance. To walk rather than watch. To join rather than remain behind. To take the second street simply because curiosity asks where it leads.

At seventy-five, travelling alone through South America required more than an open mind. It required a body able to manage airports, altitude, long days, changing climates and the ordinary demands of being responsible for myself.

Independence is built through the small movements
we repeat before we urgently need them.

03

Train for the
Life You Want

There is no universal ideal body. The useful body is the one that supports the life a person actually wants to live.

If you want to hike, train for the path. If you want to travel, train for endurance and balance. If you want to play with grandchildren, train for the floor and the return to standing. If you want to remain independent, train the ordinary movements independence requires.

A training plan should not begin with appearance. It should begin with intention.

What do you want your body to make possible?

04

Age Changes the Method,
Not the Need to Move

Growing older changes the conversation. Recovery matters more. Old injuries speak more clearly. Pride becomes an increasingly poor instructor.

The answer is not to stop. It is to become more intelligent.

We adapt the distance, the resistance, the speed and the rhythm. We replace comparison with attention. We train what life requires rather than what our younger selves once considered impressive.

The goal is not to perform youth.
The goal is to protect possibility.

05

Listen Before the Body
Has to Shout

The body communicates long before it forces us to listen.

Tension, fatigue, pain and restlessness are not moral failures. They are information. Listening does not mean becoming preoccupied with every sensation. It means responding before a whisper must become a shout.

There is a difference between discomfort that accompanies growth and pain that asks for care. Wisdom lies in learning that difference—and in being willing to adjust without interpreting every adjustment as defeat.

Respecting the body is not withdrawal from life.
It is how we remain in it.

06

Stillness Is Part
of Movement

Meditation taught me that stillness is not the absence of life.

Breathing, recovery and sleep do not interrupt movement. They make movement sustainable. A body that is constantly driven eventually stops cooperating.

Yoga and meditation are not escapes from the physical world. At their best, they return us to it with greater awareness. We notice how we stand, breathe, react and carry tension. We become present inside the body instead of treating it as transportation for the mind.

Rest is not the reward for having lived.
It is part of living well.

07

A Body
in the World

I do not want a life organised around preserving myself from experience.

I want to feel weather, distance, water, roads, mountains and the ordinary pleasure of movement. I want quiet mornings and active days. I want the body to remain a participant—not a reason to watch life from the edge.

The world is still full of wonders.
The body is how we meet them.
