Japan Diary 02: Our First Days in Osaka

Deutsch | English

Osaka · The days before the motorcycle tour

Our first days in Japan belong to Osaka. The motorcycles are taking a break; our feet are the advance party. Anneliese and I explore market lanes, neon signs and the castle. A city that manages plenty of revs without an engine.

Beneath the roof of the market arcade, the stalls line up one after another. Our photographs show fish, seafood and food sold ready to eat. We take a photograph together at the entrance — one of the first entries in our Japan diary.

In the evening, we stand beneath the famous illuminated Glico sign in Dōtonbori. The enormous advertising signs give this part of Osaka its unmistakable face. We take another photograph together.

Osaka Castle in the rain

At Osaka Castle, an umbrella joins us. An extremely useful travel companion: undemanding, foldable and immediately available when the weather turns. Behind us are gardens, water and the castle. After the market lanes and neon lights, Osaka shows its quieter side — while we practise posing together beneath a rather modest-sized roof.

Then our journey takes us to Kyoto, where the organised motorcycle tour begins on 26 September.
