Our Japan journey has collected several ways of getting around: a plane, a motorcycle, our feet — and now a boat. In a small coastal town, we change perspective. The BMW can manage without me for a while. I am looking at Japan from the water.
This time, the water sets the direction
Anneliese on board, blue water, wooded hills and a sky looking particularly photogenic in our pictures. The boat has rows of red seats. The seagulls apparently prefer the space above them. There is certainly plenty of air traffic around us. They can decide among themselves who flies at the front. Today, I have no ambition to lead.
Houses with a very short walk to the water
From the boat we see houses close to the shore: roofs, facades and green slopes behind them. After the broad volcanic landscapes, Japan shows another face. Smaller this time, closer to the water, with many details rather than one grand panorama.
Our photographs capture both: the wide view across the bay and the houses along its edge. There is also a narrow street between the buildings. Sometimes a journey offers such variety simply because you change your angle of view.
A different engine, the same curiosity
I love riding a motorcycle. But apparently a boat trip also belongs in my personal Japan programme. At 76, you are allowed to enjoy more than one way of getting around. Fortunately, curiosity does not require a particular driving licence.
