Japan Diary 13: The Iron Rule of 6–7–8

Deutsch | English

9 October 2026 · On the road in Japan

Our motorcycle tour has one iron rule: 6–7–8. Up at six, breakfast at seven, at the motorcycles by eight. It sounds reassuringly straightforward. For us, however, the routine actually begins at 5.45 a.m.

Because eight means full riding gear on, ready for the day’s briefing and then departure. Anyone still wondering where they left their gloves has not quite understood the rule.

This journey is wonderful. It is also demanding. There is so much to take in, the days start early, and the road keeps presenting situations that need our full attention.

Today, a square, sharp-edged stone was lying in the road. One of our fellow riders was looking to either side, missed it and rode over it. The result: a flat tyre. Thankfully, he was unhurt. The motorcycle had to be left behind for collection, and he continued in the car. One brief moment, and the day’s arrangements suddenly change.

Yesterday, we waited about ten minutes for another member of the group. He had stopped at the roadside because he was not feeling well. Whether he was tired or it was something else, I cannot say. He did a few breathing exercises, took his time and rejoined us after his break.

That is part of travelling as a group, too. We set off together, wait for one another and discover that everyone brings their own pace and limits. Even the most beautiful route cannot change the fact that the body sometimes needs a pause.

And in between, there are wonderfully playful moments. At the Seki Hamono Museum, we pose for photographs with swords and splendid robes. The expressions on our faces show just how seriously we take our new roles.

The other photograph shows the river, the buildings and the wooded mountains in the sunlight. A picture can make this journey look wonderfully peaceful. Fortunately, it does not reveal how early we got up.

Tomorrow, it is 6–7–8 again. Which, for us, means 5.45.
